The Next Chapter

Now that Songsaengnim: A Korea Diary is published, you may be wondering what's next.

You may not be wondering anything of the sort, but allow me to humour myself.

I will be promoting the book—I'm already doing so through Twitter—by organizing readings, and for those of you in Ottawa, I'll let you know of any upcoming dates.

When I started writing Songsaengnim, I originally planned to have the story cover two years, from 1997 to 1999, but as I started putting it together, I realized that the book would be too long, almost 1000 pages. And so I decided to break it up into two books.

The second book, Gyeosunim, started coming together before I finished Songsaengnim. Almost two years ago, I went to Scotland to research the first chapter of the book, and I even started writing out some of the chapter while I sat in a pub in North Berwick. And I published those notes on a new blog.

I'm happy to say that I've finally revisited those notes and have almost finished the rough draft. And on Wednesday, April 11, I will publish the full first chapter of Gyeosunim.

And, as I did with Songsaengnim, I will post the chapters of the book as I write them.

As with Songsaengnim, I encourage you to provide feedback and comments. As with Songsaengnim, your comments and feedback may help drive the story.

But more than anything, it will drive me.

I was originally going to turn my nose up to it. I was meeting up with some long-time friends from my journalism days at a roadhouse near IKEA, last summer, and the beer menu didn't look promising to me. There were the standard Molson Coors offerings and no local craft beer, and I was almost going to order a glass of the house red. But there was a brew that I didn't recognize and sounded Spanish, and I became curious. It's a lager, which also made me tempted to pass it up, because that is one of my least favourite styles of beer. A Demotion

Now that the first draft of Dark Water is done, I've started looking at the story and the characters with a more critical eye. I want my eventual readers to believe that the story is plausible. For the first draft, I did a lot of Googling and asked ChatGPT a lot of questions. In roundabout ways, without sharing excerpts of scenes, I would describe scenarios that reflected the content of the story and ask the AI tool if what I described was realistic. More times than not, Chat GPT would chime in with a positive assessment of that scenario, to the extent that I thought it was a yes -bot. Its responses would be encouraging, starting with a "that's a great idea and really develops your (character/plot) well." If there was something that didn't go well, the AI tool would still give me encouragement but would offer a suggestion that would "tweak" my scenario.
