Photo Friday: Writing on the Wall

Sometimes, I come by my Where In Ottawa pictures by accident.

When I'm choosing a site to use for my monthly challenge, I often think about where I'd like to go and explore. Other times, I pass places day in and day out and I think, one of these days, I'm going to shoot that place.

That time happens the most often. Countless times, I've driven by the Unitarian church, the Ottawa Archives, and Odell House. I tell myself that I will return with a camera and take pictures. I like those sites because I have time to think about shots, consider angles, formulate the photos that I ultimately snap.

Last month, I happened upon the abandoned factory as a result to my current quest to lose weight. (I've lost about 10 pounds in the last four weeks—as of this morning, I weigh 165.0 lbs, nekkid.) I got off the bus at the Terraces de la Chaudière in Gatineau and walked to the Adult High School on Preston Street and the Queensway, a little more than three kilometres. My kids were in their dance recital and I was meeting them there. Because I wanted to photograph their numbers while I worked backstage, I was carrying my camera bag with me.

For the most part, I walked those three kilometres at a brisk pace. I wanted to work up a sweat, to burn some of those pounds away. But when I saw the abandoned factory near the Chaudière Bridge, I slowed right down, and then stopped.

I found my Where In Ottawa location for June.

I shot the photos that you can see from Monday's post. But I always do one closeup of an obscure spot, something that makes you stop and think. If you know the spot really well, you'll get it right away. If you don't, you have to wait for the clues.

I did find one obscure area of the factory, and took a picture. But then I thought, this could be anywhere. And so I used the picture that is at the top of that post.

But I still liked the shot I first took, so here it is.

What do you think? Would you have known where this photo was shot? Do you know Ottawa this well?

Whether you're trying to lose weight, like I am, or you just have a hankering for fresh air, get out and walk around our gorgeous city. You never know that you'll find.

And it just might be the next Where In Ottawa spot. The next challenge is Monday, July 2.

Happy Friday!

  1. I know Ottawa well but am stumped! I like the "We come for treats" part though. Sounds like a clue! ;)
