Photo Friday: Coming Down

Autumn came on full force, this year, and seems to be leaving in a hurry.

 Colours made themselves apparent on the leaves at the beginning of October, painting the Gatineau hills in bright reds, oranges, and yellows. A few, short weeks after, all that seemed left on the branches were a few yellow leaves, the reds long turned to brown, lying on the ground.

 With this week's rain and cold wind, I fear fall will be over before the month ends. But I hope, and look up to enjoy what is left of my favourite season.

I was originally going to turn my nose up to it. I was meeting up with some long-time friends from my journalism days at a roadhouse near IKEA, last summer, and the beer menu didn't look promising to me. There were the standard Molson Coors offerings and no local craft beer, and I was almost going to order a glass of the house red. But there was a brew that I didn't recognize and sounded Spanish, and I became curious. It's a lager, which also made me tempted to pass it up, because that is one of my least favourite styles of beer. But then I thought, what the hell, I might as well try it so that I could objectively poo-poo it down the road. And it was summer, and I was hot, and needed something light to quench my thirst. A Demotion

Now that the first draft of Dark Water is done, I've started looking at the story and the characters with a more critical eye. I want my eventual readers to believe that the story is plausible. For the first draft, I did a lot of Googling and asked ChatGPT a lot of questions. In roundabout ways, without sharing excerpts of scenes, I would describe scenarios that reflected the content of the story and ask the AI tool if what I described was realistic. More times than not, Chat GPT would chime in with a positive assessment of that scenario, to the extent that I thought it was a yes -bot. Its responses would be encouraging, starting with a "that's a great idea and really develops your (character/plot) well." If there was something that didn't go well, the AI tool would still give me encouragement but would offer a suggestion that would "tweak" my scenario.
