Proud Dad

It wasn't her best effort.

I mean, she did spend Friday night and all day Saturday participating in a music festival between various high school bands throughout Ottawa. All of the three bands in which she performed came away with gold medals.

DD15 also earned an award for outstanding musician in her group, as well as two full scholarships to music training camps, this summer.

She's really, really good.

So on Sunday, when she decided to bake me a birthday cake, I was impressed. I've had her cakes before: she insists on making everything from scratch. Chocolate cake with raspberry frosting. Two of my favourite flavours.

She placed the batter in the oven and then moved on to completing some chores around the house. Out of the oven, as the two sponge layers cooled, DD15 was in the basement, practicing on her drums. Her rhythm and tempo were quick and solid.

Back in the kitchen to make the icing. The smell of fresh raspberries, on top of the chocolate that permeated the ground floor, was intoxicating.

"Uh-oh," I heard, as she spread the frosting, "this isn't going well." She had applied a lot of the pink icing on the first layer, had added the top layer, and was starting to cover the sides and top. Though the cake was cooled, the icing ran down.

Three whole raspberries on the top centre, and a lid over the cake plate. The icing continued to run down, being contained within the glass. The top layer began to slide and was stopped by the cover.

Not her best effort, but the flavours were perfect.
