I walked into the room not knowing what to expect. I saw a post on Bluesky that shared a link to a gathering that was called The Writing Circle , which was held at the library that is in my part of Ottawa. The group met on the third Thursday of the month, at three o'clock. Except next month, when it meets on November 27. I first learned of this group in April, but because the family and I were preparing for our trip to Peru and I had other obligations on days when the group met, I decided I would wait until the group started again, if they did, indeed, start up again. Because I was in the midst of writing my first draft of Dark Water , I was intrigued. Would this group of fellow writers—novice or experienced—be able to share ideas and provide constructive criticism to one another? Would the Writing Circle help me to be a better writer? Sometimes, It's Better to Seek Permission

I used to love the adage that it's sometimes easier to beg forgiveness than to seek permission. There are many things that I've done in life where I thought there were risks in performing them. If they worked out, great: if not, I hoped I'd be forgiven. Many years ago, I wrote about how a friend and I ran into each other while trying to photograph the same thing. We were looking to get night shots of a historic Ottawa building that was lit up with Christmas lights, only the premises was surrounded by an iron gate and fencing. When a car exited the grounds through the open gate, my friend and I snuck in and found a spot where we could capture better images . But we had to wait for someone else to open the gate before we could get out again. From a legal standpoint, we were trespassing. But considering our intentions, I don't think anyone would have ever pressed charges if we got caught. We would have begged forgiveness. For a couple of weeks, I've been thinking of go...

Where In Ottawa LXIII

If you read any of my posts from last week, you may have learned that this month marks 20 years since my wife and I first arrived in Chŏnju, South Korea, to teach English as a second language in a private academy, known as a hagwon . It was a life-altering experience that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. A new culture, foreign language and customs, an economic collapse, political unrest, constant threats of attacks from North Korea, and more. To celebrate this anniversary, I've decided to throw in a copy of my novel, Songsaengnim: A Korea Diary , to whoever solves this month's photo challenge, Where In Ottawa .
